WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FEEL FREE?

I think every human being is searching for the feeling of freedom, not freedom itself—because most of us already have that—but the feeling of being free.

But what does it truly mean to feel free?

Maybe it’s something unreachable, impossible to obtain. Or maybe many of the things we long for are things we already have, but they don’t feel like they’re ours.

Let’s take as an example someone who is chasing financial stability, and who has a job, a house, etc. One might think that this person is indeed financially stable, but they might not feel that way. Why? (Just as we could say that we are free, but why don’t we feel like we are?)

Each of us has something we chase endlessly. For instance, someone who has financial stability might not feel like they have it because they always want more, because it’s never enough, because even if this person became a millionaire, they would never consider themselves financially stable. This may happen because the more we have, the more the fear of losing everything grows. —But if what we have can disappear, was it ever truly ours? Maybe it’s true that we never really possess anything, because at any moment something could happen that makes us lose it. It’s as if we need infinite backup plans, and even with all of them, something unforeseen could still happen, a missed detail, and in the end we could lose everything anyway.—

So how do we live without this fear? Maybe to feel free, we need to free ourselves from it. Fear locks us inside a prison from which it is impossible to escape, because if the key to open the cell represents, for us, the security of something or someone—and based on what was said earlier, we will never truly obtain that security—we end up sentencing ourselves to a life of imprisonment. Given this, perhaps to feel free it is simply necessary to let go of fear. But the question that remains is: how do we let it go? Is it even possible, or is it one of those things that cannot be reached, meaning we will never truly feel free?
